How ranking works

Belts in BJJ are awarded for demonstrated skill and time on the mat.

WhiteDay oneWhere everyone starts, whatever your background. You learn to breathe under pressure, protect yourself in bad positions, and recognise the basic guards, passes and escapes by name. Nobody expects you to win anything yet.
Blue~1–2 yearsYour first promotion. A blue belt can defend themselves against an untrained person, survive against experienced training partners, and has a handful of techniques they trust when things get chaotic.
Purple~4–5 yearsA serious grappler by any standard. Your game has a shape of its own: positions you hunt for, attacks you chain together, and a clear idea of what to do when they fail. Purple belts often start helping newer students find their own game.
Brown~7–8 yearsThe last stop before black. Fewer new techniques, far more refinement of the ones you already own. Timing, pressure and efficiency become the focus, and most brown belts are teaching nearly as much as they train.
Black~10+ yearsA decade or more of consistent training, awarded only when an instructor judges the skill is there. It marks the beginning of mastery, not the end. The techniques are the same ones you learned at white belt; what changes is how deeply you understand them.
